Roan had taken every backroad he could think of. His now pristine truck was dirty again with the dust from the gravel roads, but it was a small price to pay for being out here with Luna again. They had found the old dirt tract that ran between his farm and her parent’s farm. Although it hadn’t been his land back then, they had still liked to race along the road back to the creek that cut its way through acres of farm fields like a long, winding serpent.

Parking down by the creek meant they were absolutely secluded. It was always the perfect hideaway. There was a low-level water crossing that connected the two front fields to the two back fields. No one could see them unless they came down the farm track.

They climbed out of his truck to sit in the back bed to stare up at the bright moon and the scattering of stars, and listen to the sound of the water bubbling and rushing under the cement bridge. He always carried an old quilt in the back, to wrap something fragile and now he was glad that he had it for them to lie out on and do some star gazing.

Truth be told, he was glad he brought the blanket for another reason.

He’d learned from years ago when they’d been dating.

“This truck is definitely nicer than your old truck,” Luna chuckled, still staring at the stars with her head on his stomach.

“Yes. It’s not as loud. We couldn’t always sneak through fields and down here without your Dad hearing the muffler from my old truck.”

She chuckled. “Or the previous owner of your farm hearing us tear across his field.”

“True. I’m glad we never got caught for trespassing.”

Luna laughed softly and then sighed. “I forgot about stars.”

“How could you forget about stars?”

“You don’t really see them in the city.” She rolled over onto her stomach and stacked her fist, resting her chin on them to look up at him. His heart melted looking down at her, her leg resting on the top of his.

Just like old times.

“No. I suppose you wouldn’t,” he remarked, lazily. “I don’t like the city much.”

“It’s okay.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Just okay? When you were in high school you were all about the city and excitement.”

“I also was really into blue lipstick and frosted tips,” she replied, sardonically.

He chuckled. “I was tempted once to frost my tips for you. It was fleeting.”

She smiled and then sat up. “Really?”

“Why are you surprised by that?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know.”

He sat up too then, to look her in the eye. “Back then I would’ve done anything for you.”

Even in the dim light he could see the faint blush of pink wash across her cheeks. “Well, I’m glad that you didn’t. I liked you the way you were. The way you are.”

He reached out and stroked her cheek, letting his fingers trail and linger on the soft skin of her cheek. All he wanted to do was kiss her.
